Hillbilly Elegy Director Ron Howard Says Hes Surprised And Disappointed By Jd Vances Campaign Rhetoric

Hillbilly Elegy Director Ron Howard Slams J.D. Vance's Campaign Rhetoric

Academy Award-winning director takes aim at Republican Senate candidate

Howard: Vance's views 'inconsistent' with film's message

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ron Howard has expressed his disappointment with the campaign rhetoric of J.D. Vance, the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Ohio.

Howard, who directed the 2020 film "Hillbilly Elegy," based on Vance's memoir of the same name, said he was "surprised and disappointed" by Vance's recent comments on issues such as immigration and race.

"I think some of the things that J.D. has said on the campaign trail are inconsistent with the message of 'Hillbilly Elegy,'" Howard said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Howard said he believes that Vance's campaign rhetoric is "divisive" and "hurtful" and that it does not reflect the values of the people of Appalachia.

"I think it's really important to have a conversation about the challenges that people in Appalachia face," Howard said. "But I don't think that conversation should be based on division or hate."

Vance has defended his campaign rhetoric, saying that he is simply speaking his mind and that he is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in.

The race for the U.S. Senate in Ohio is one of the most closely watched races in the country. Vance is facing off against Democratic candidate Tim Ryan in the November election.
